Cousins for a Cause was founded in 2014 when we realized it was essential for us to give back to the community that has been so good to us. What we didn’t know was that this philanthropic endeavor would change our lives forever. We have never been more passionate about anything and are so proud of the work we are doing.
Let us start from the beginning. Sabin was raised in a single parent home in Southern Maine. While there was a great deal of love in his home, money was scarce and he lacked a male role model. Sabin was a smart, athletic kid at risk of going down the wrong path. He had a rebellious side, and would act out and charm his way out of sticky situations. This behavior eventually landed him in jail where he was faced with the decision of choosing which path he really wanted to take. His mother knew he needed guidance, and after being on a waitlist for two years, Sabin was matched at age 14 with a Big Brother from the Big Brothers Big Sisters foundation in Portland Maine. The “Big Brother” was Stephen Lacovara, age 22. After reading an ad in the local Pennysaver, Stephen decided to volunteer. The two clicked immediately. For the first time in Sabin’s life, he had a man in his life that he could confide in, trust, and ask those tough and embarrassing questions. Steve came to each of Sabin’s games, which made Sabin feel very good.
They talked about girls, school, the trouble he would get in, his goals, home life, and soon it felt like Steve was an actual brother, not someone that was matched through a program. Long story short, Sabin was the best man in Steve’s wedding, Steve named his son after Sabin, and today (20+ years later) the two are closer than ever. Because of Steve’s decision to volunteer, Sabin’s life was forever changed.
While Sabin could never repay him for his love and guidance, we can only pay it forward. Cousins for a Cause is exclusively partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles and our mission is to gain more exposure, donations, and volunteers for this amazing foundation. We are “Big Brothers” here in LA and we have our friends involved in the program too. We have encouraged the members of our CML family (franchised cities throughout the US) to also get involved and give back. Sabin is now a board member for the LA chapter and in 2016 and was named the National Big Brother of the year by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America for 2016.
How can you help? Donations and time. 100% of your donation to Cousins for a Cause will be given to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles. Your money will go towards creating more stories like Sabin & Steve’s; imagine if someone didn’t put that ad in the Pennysaver, how different Sabin’s life would likely be. Equally important as money, we need mentors. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a “Big”, wherever you live, please email us and we will connect. Trust us, you have the time. You will feel a level of awareness and happiness you had never felt before.
If not you, who? If not now, when? Donate to our GoFundMe page! 100% of each donation goes to Big Brothers Big Sisters and is tax deductible. Donate and read more by clicking here.
